Snorkel to Your Heart’s Content in Jamaica
What makes Jamaica one of the Caribbean’s most visited tourist destinations? The sunny weather, the soft sandy beaches, the friendly people and their laid- back lifestyle, the excellent hotels with exclusive amenities and the sheer variety of water sports that visitors can indulge in Jamaica, in our view, contribute to make it the most visited tourist destination in the Caribbean.
We were in Jamaica last summer for our annual vacation and we chose to stay in a resort on the beach in Montego Bay, one of Jamaica’s most visited tourist destinations. We wanted to try some water sports and we were intrigued when friends told us that snorkeling is the easiest way to see the colorful marine life underwater. They told us that the site at Doctor’s Cove Beach in Montego Bay is one of the most visited tourist destination for snorkelers as it is easily accessible. We were able to rent the equipment from the tour operator attached to our hotel and he too assured us that Doctor’s Cove Beach is a beginner friendly site
The water was very clear and we could see squid, parrot fish, skates, and lots of coral. The guide told us not to touch anything and be careful where we put our feet and was quite helpful and knowledgeable. He also guided us to the other activities at the Montego Bay Marine Park, including scuba diving. With a little bit more experience, perhaps on our next trip we will venture farther away from the shore to snorkel in Seaworld and the Royal Reefs where one can find barjacks and wrasses, as well as parrotfish. We liked the snorkeling experience so much that we bought some snorkeling equipment and carried it with us when we went to Ochos Rios and Negril. I didn’t think the snorkeling in Ochos Rios was as good as the one in Montego Bay, but then, may be I was biased.
