FTP Uploading

Filed under: Great Web Tips — @ 7:01 pm

After your web site is designed, the next thing you’ll need to do is to upload your files to the server using ftp. Ftp simply stands for file transfer protocol. To do that you must have a ftp software program. There are several free ftp software in the market and the one i’m using right now is smartftp and it’s free. I always try to go for freebies unless it’s totally necessary to pay. To get started, click on the link below to begin downloading.

Smartftp

Now that you’ve downloaded the program, it’s time to learn how to use it. The program itself actually contains a tutorial but here i will explain it briefly. I assume you are running the program now.

1. Go to file and click on new remote browser. This actually means it will connect to the server. In order to do this you must key in the address, username and password. e.g. Address - ftp .yourdomainname.com username - your username and password - your password. Take note of the ftp. in front for the address. You must key in that or it will not work. Port is by default 21 so don’t worry about that.

2. Go to file again and click on new local browser. This browser will open on the right and it refers to your local files.

3. To upload files you actually get it from the local browser to the remote browser. Before this, make sure your initial file is named index.html or index.htm in the local browser. If the initial file is not named such then nothing will appear on the screen. As for the rest of the files you can name it whatever you like.

4. Now that you’ve got the name correct, left click on the file index.html in the local browser and drag it to public_html folder in the remote browser. The remote browser consists of the left and right section. Left section refers to the root directory and right section refers to the file and folders under it. e.g. highlight the public_html folder on the left and its file and folders will appear on the right. Now just click whatever files you want to upload from the local browser and drag it to the right section of the remote browser.

5. Once you’ve done so the program will do a file transfer to the server. Take not that you should highlight on th epublic_html folder and press on F5 after every transfer to ensure it’s updated.

6. Open a new window and type in your website url. You will see the screen as those of your file. Simple right?

7. Lastly, if your file contains any images, make sure you do a file transfer of those images over as well.

Hope I’m clear enough. Any queries please visit my web site and drop me a comment at ==>http://www.internetyounme.blogspot.com

How Well Is Your Website Designed to Sell?

Filed under: Great Web Tips — @ 7:45 pm

Why do some websites sell better than others? Do you need a marketing
degree to create a website? Does design have much impact on sales or is web copy the all important key to your websites success?

You may not realize this but many successful internet marketing
businesses have found that design, or layout of a website should be a
marketing decision based on research done by internet marketers, not
designers. Some very basic websites actually sell much better than
their “Flashy” counterparts.

This is in no way a negative reflection of the incredible talent that website
designers have. You will clearly have a much more professional looking
site when an expert applies his handiwork. However, it is very important
to understand some of the key elements that smart marketers will make
certain to appear (or NOT appear) on their highly profitable sites. If you
are aware of these you may be able to select a designer who is
knowledgeable in marketing as well as design.

Designers with a flair for color can make compelling choices that set a
mood, but reading on a computer screen demands as much contrast as
possible, otherwise the reader will have vision fatigue. You don’t want to
irritate your visitors in any way or they may leave, so be certain that the
main body of your website copy is black writing on a white background,
or as close to that ideal as possible.

Colors also look different on different monitors, so what looks cool and
calm on one monitor may be bright and glaring on another. Make sure
you check your color scheme on at least the most popular monitors.
In most cases, simple works best.

Striking, bold graphics can be a real eye-catcher for visitors. Still,
internet marketers are pretty much unanimous in stating that you should
avoid flash graphics as much as possible. Again, they tend to tire visitors
eyes, make the page load slowly, or create a distraction from the written
copy. Even if they are initially impressed by the work it may subconsciously
annoy them. Simplicity is again the best way to go.

The first ‘fold’ of your site is similar to opening a traditional paper
letter. If you remove a letter from an envelope that is folded in three,
you will obviously view the top ‘fold’ first.

This fold is what individuals will see without having to scroll down the page.
It’s extremely important that elements like descriptive headlines, your
contact number, newsletter subscription form etc. all show in the first
fold. Do NOT place banners here unless they are the main element of your
business as you will be giving prime space to other websites and your
customer (which you fought hard to get in the first place) will be gone
just as quickly.

These are just some of the important elements you should be aware of
when looking for someone to design your site.

The History of Internet Web directories

Filed under: Great Web Tips, House Of Media, Technology Portal — @ 12:03 pm

The concept for the Internet was conceived in 1969 by an agency of the U.S. government. The primary reason for creating the Internet, was to allow users at one university in talk to, users at another university computer. The Internet was known by ARPNET back then, and allowed messages to be passed between the two computers. People use the Internet web directory and hypertext language in web pages to organize information that is available on the Internet.

The browsers on the Internet contain search engines that access Internet web directory categories that are listed on a web browser’s search engine web pages. The Internet web directory functions similarly to a telephone directory that would be used in the home to find business and personal information that you need.

The Internet web directory is presented in list form with links to various Internet locations that are separated by categories, with time the Internet has developed into a huge range of different directories, some of them are theme specific. The website would be considered a category of information, i.e., physicians, home decorating, or construction materials. There may be thousands of listing in an Internet web directory, and under that one category, there may be subcategories that are also listed by the hundreds of thousands.
